What is Arthritis ?

Arthritis is inflammation of a joint and can affect one or multiple joints. There are many possible causes.

The condition begins with inflammation of the joint lining (synovium), leading to warmth, pain, redness, stiffness, and swelling. Swelling is caused by synovitis (inflammation of the synovium) and/or effusion (an increase in synovial fluid).

Inflammation increases blood flow to the joint, bringing immune cells and inflammatory chemicals into the surrounding soft tissues. These trigger a cascade of responses that can damage cartilage and bone, potentially leading to joint failure over time.

Arthritis affects 1 in 1000 children and is as common as epilepsy. Arthritis in most cases, is treatable and the key is early diagnosis and access to the appropriate treatment.
